Frequently asked questions
Where are you located?
I live in the north-east of Melbourne, but take photos all over Greater Melbourne (and further away, just ask!).
Do you have a studio?
No, I only shoot on location: either in your home or a place you and your family love to spend time. This allows me to capture images that tell an authentic story about your family.
Booking a session
When to book your session
If you’re booking a maternity session, it’s best to book soon after your 20-week scan.
If you’re booking a newborn session, please do so while you’re still pregnant. Based on your due date, I will pencil your session in. But babies have a habit of not arriving on time, so this can be changed. If you have already had your baby, do still get in touch as I might still be able to fit you in.
What does the booking fee cover?
This fee secures your photography session and covers my time on the day. It also includes the time I spend editing 25-30 photos from the session, which will you will be able to see during your in-home viewing and ordering session.
Prints, products and digital files are not included in this fee. These can be purchased during your in-home viewing and ordering session.
When is the best time to take photos of a newborn?
Under three weeks of age is best. After this they start to wake up (making them much harder to pose), get flaky skin and pimples. But, you can still get lovely photos up to about five weeks.
When is the best time to take maternity photos?
Between 32-36 weeks is best. This ensures that your bump is lovely and round and that you're still relatively comfortable and mobile!
Your portrait session
Where will the session take place?
It’s completely up to you! We can either take photos at your home, or at a favourite location, such as your local market, the park or the beach – or a combination of locations (time permitting). If you're stuck for inspiration, I have a few favourite places around Melbourne that I'd be happy to share with you.
I recommend that newborn sessions take place in the warmth and comfort of your home, though if the weather is warm enough we can always venture outside.
What time will the session take place?
Morning light is just lovely – and children are more likely to be on their best behaviour at this time! For this reason, I portrait sessions are best scheduled first thing in the morning.
But late afternoon light is equally as lovely, so I'm happy to schedule your shoot then if this suits you better.
How long will the session last?
Most sessions last between 2-3 hours - though I don't work to a strict time limit and always stay as long as is needed.
Newborn sessions generally take a little longer - between 3-4 hours. This allows enough time for feeding, comforting, clothing changes and lots of cuddles.
What should I bring to the session?
If the session is away from your home, just bring along anything you would for a day out: snacks and drinks, favourite toys and games and lots of wipes!
What should wear at my session?
It's important to be yourself, so don't feel like you have to dress up for the occasion. But below are some simple tips that will make sure your photos look as beautiful as possible.
A good rule is to coordinate but not match. Textured clothing such as cord, buttons and knitwear - and accessories like hats - add interest to your photos.
The session guide you receive once you book your session will have many more tips on what to wear.
What do we do if the weather is bad?
Don't worry about grey and cloudy days, these are actually some of the best conditions to photograph in. But if the weather turns wet on the day of your session we have a few options:
- Change the location to indoors
- Get outside and make a feature of the rain
- Reschedule for another day (subject to availability)
After the session
What will happen after the shoot
Within two weeks of your session, we will arrange an in-home viewing and ordering session.
I'll show you your finished images as well as some samples of prints, photo albums and wall art products, so you can see all the ways that your images can be displayed. Together we will choose a beautiful selection of prints, art products and digital files that you will cherish forever.
How many photos will I have to choose from?
After your session, I will select and professionally retouch between 25-30 of your best images. You can view and order these images during your in-home viewing and ordering session.
Do you have a minimum spend on shoots?
No I don't. So you can be sure that there will be no nasty surprises at your ordering session.
How much do most people spend on photographs and products?
Most clients spend between $1200 and $2000 on a combination of albums, prints and digital files.
Who has copyright on the photos?
I retain the copyright to all my images. However, you are welcome to buy individual images or the complete set of print-ready digital files on a disc.
With the purchase of any digital file, you will be granted a license to reproduce the images at a printing lab for your personal use, or to give to family and friends. You are not permitted to enter the pictures into any competitions, or to sell them onto third parties such as stock libraries.
